Photography Curriculum
Photography Minor 1
An introduction to photography for students with no experience, this course
covers the basics of film, camera, and darkroom in one semester.
Understanding the technical fundamentals will lead into the creative and
communicative aspects of the art of photography. We would like you to
own a manual 35mm camera, but you may borrow one if necessary.
Homework required
Photography Minor 2
A more demanding beginning photography course for students with little or no
photography or art experience, Minor 2 is also a continuation for students
who have taken Photography Minor 1 and who want to continue with photography.
More in depth coverage of the range of possibilities in the art and craft of
photography is included. Further exploration of the technical aspects of film,
camera, and darkroom work will lead to an understanding of the artistic
process and history of the medium of photography as an art form.
Homework required.
Photography Minor 3
(prerequisite: Photography Minor 2)
More emphases on personal expression and development in the art of
photography, this course is a continuation of material introduced
in Photography Minor 2. Homework required.
Photography Major 1, Major 2, Major 3
(Prerequisite: Photography Minor 1, Photography Minor 2, or permission)
In this advanced course, students will learn about the functions of the camera,
film processing, and advanced darkroom printing. Through individual
work and assignments, students will develop their own individual style.
Through lectures, discussions and slide shows, students will explore
a variety of techniques, the applications of photography, and the
history of the medium. Book reports and photography related
homework are required in addition to shooting assignments.
We would like you to own a manual 35mm camera,
but you may also borrow one. Homework required.
The follow up courses, Major 2 and 3, are honors courses.
Work Study in Photography
(Teacher approval. Must be taking a photography course as well)
Students help to maintain and run the photography lab,
as well as helping beginning students.
Independent Study in Photography
(Teacher approval)
For students whose schedule does not permit joining a regular class
but who do the same assignments and are scheduled for different blocks.
Homework required.
