Photography Curriculum

Photography Minor 1

An introduction to photography for students with no experience, this course

covers the basics of  film, camera, and darkroom in one semester.

Understanding the technical fundamentals will lead into the creative and

communicative aspects of the art of photography.  We would like you to

own a manual 35mm camera, but you may borrow one if necessary.

Homework required

Photography Minor 2

A more demanding beginning photography course for students with little or no

photography or art experience, Minor 2 is also a continuation for students

who have taken Photography Minor 1 and who want to continue with photography.

More in depth coverage of the range of possibilities in the art and craft of

photography is included.  Further exploration of the technical aspects of film,

camera, and darkroom work will lead to an understanding of the artistic

process and history of the medium of photography as an art form.

Homework required.

Photography Minor 3

(prerequisite:  Photography Minor 2)

More emphases on personal expression and development in the art of

photography, this course is a continuation of material introduced

in Photography Minor 2. Homework required.

Photography Major 1, Major 2, Major 3

(Prerequisite:  Photography Minor 1, Photography Minor 2, or permission)

In this advanced course, students will learn about the functions of the camera,

film processing, and advanced darkroom printing. Through individual

work and assignments, students will develop their own individual style.

Through lectures, discussions and slide shows, students will explore

a variety of techniques, the applications of photography, and the

history of the medium.  Book reports and  photography related

homework are required in addition to shooting assignments.

We would like you to own a manual 35mm camera,

but you may also borrow one. Homework required.

The follow up courses, Major 2 and 3, are honors courses.
